Once an operating delayed coking unit is suddenly shut down, how long does it generally take for coking to occur within the tubes? Some say it’s within a few seconds; we have encountered situations where the tube walls became clogged with coke in a relatively short period of time
The time at which coking occurs is related to the rate of temperature drop inside the furnace tubes, as well as to the external temperature. Therefore, the coking time depends on the operating temperature at that time; different operating conditions result in different coking times, so it has to be determined based on the actual circumstances. It isn’t a fixed value.
