Typical mechanical types such as float-type or inverted barrel-type valves require a back pressure ratio of less than or equal to 80% (exit pressure divided by inlet pressure) to function properly. Therefore, for the same discharge volume, the lower the pressure drop, the larger the size of the steam trap, and the less reliable its operation becomes. Although the backpressure ratio of some products listed in the manufacturer’s samples can reach 90%, this figure is somewhat exaggerated.
