We produce biodiesel using the esterification method in reaction vessels. The problem at present is that severe coking occurs in these vessels; theoretically, such an issue should not arise at temperatures below 300 degrees. Some kind soul, please help.
Why is such a high temperature used for methylation? Does 300 degrees refer to the temperature of the heating medium?
Generally speaking, local overheating and excessive residence time can both lead to coking. If the residence time is too long, overreaction, or even coking, can occur. I believe it can still be easily detected in this way, so I guess it’s not a matter of dwell time. Causes of local overheating: 1) Slow stirring inside the reactor, resulting in prolonged heating in certain areas ; 2) If the viscosity of the liquid in the tank is too high, causing it to stick to the walls, then a mixing method with a wall-scraping function should be chosen in order to reduce the amount of liquid that sticks to the walls and prevent localized overheating ; 3) The design of the equipment itself is unreasonable, resulting in localized overheating. This situation is not common, but if all other factors have been ruled out, it might be worth examining the device itself. (I’ve encountered such situations where it’s impossible to avoid coking, but I noticed that each time coking occurred it tended to happen around a certain area, so I suspected there was something wrong with the equipment itself, and indeed that was the case.) In short, by analyzing the problem step by step, following the clues presented by the symptoms and eliminating possibilities one after another, it’s possible to identify the root of the issue. Oils tend to caramelize when heated; here, coking occurs even at 280 degrees. If a high reaction temperature isn’t required, use steam instead
It seems to be a problem with mixing; the mixing speed is probably too low. But if the speed is increased, there’s a risk of leakage due to the seal, after all, the pressure is 16 kilograms.
