Seeking advanced control materials (DCS is a FOXBORO system)

First, there should be a good user interface. The information exchange between the advanced control software and the DCS is displayed on the DCS in the form of an operator interface, allowing operators to carry out the operations of the advanced control software through simple actions and thus implement the principles of advanced control. This includes starting and stopping the advanced control software as well as switching between advanced control and conventional DCS control; setting limits for the parameters of advanced control variables, and maintaining those variables. The design of the operation interface is directly related to the operator’s proper understanding and use of the advanced control software. Therefore, the successful application of advanced control software relies on a well-designed user interface.

The common practice nowadays is to have the advanced control system run on a higher-level computer; of course, there are exceptions as well – for instance, RMPCT can be integrated into Honeywell’s own DCS system. Communication with the DCS takes place via standard OPC protocols (OPC, OLE for Process Control). The advanced control interfaces are configured in the Foxboro DCS engineer station, just like the regular operation interfaces. Using these interfaces, operators can activate or deactivate controllers, as well as adjust various parameters of the controllers. Of course, in the software process packages for complete sets of equipment, the DCS often already includes various complex control methods such as temperature and pressure compensation calculations, proportional control, and cascade control, which are developed as part of the process design; these also fall under the category of advanced control techniques.
