I’ve just started a new job at a design institute that used to be part of the Ministry of Chemical Industry; my role involves working on processes and pipelines. I still have some time before starting work there, and I would like to ask those who are more experienced what software and materials I should learn now in order to prepare for my future tasks. I appreciate any advice you can give me

It’s useful to look at the basic standards, as well as manuals on flanges, bolts and nuts, pipe fittings, and process piping design. It’s also important to find out what type of process piping the company specializes in

I think the main thing is to first understand what types of processes that design institute specializes in, to have some knowledge of those processes, and only then move on to standards and manuals
It seems that CAD is a skill that one must master; secondly, it’s essential to understand the principles of chemical engineering – they are very important, as many calculations are based on these principles
Almost all large design institutes use 3D, right? Is 2D still used?
There are also many detailed considerations in the field of piping design; one must start with things such as material grades, flange standards, explosion and fire prevention regulations, and process design manuals as the basic guidelines. Some reputable design firms already use PDS for piping design, so it’s necessary to learn and apply this technology right away. AUTOCAD is definitely essential; I’ve seen that design firms under the former Ministry of Chemical Industry used MICROSTATION for their designs

During my two years of postgraduate studies, I worked on some small projects, focusing mainly on simulation and optimization; I had little or no exposure to things such as specifications, standards, and drawing software like AutoCAD and PDMS. One thing that stands out clearly is that the concepts from chemical engineering principles and chemical process systems can be applied directly in practice. It seems I need to study the basic textbooks and important software carefully during this time. Thank you all again
