As flocculants, they can form complexes with metal ions in water; they are low in toxicity and can be used alone. A suitable concentration for their use is generally between 2-8 ppm, with 4 ppm being the optimal level. They can also be used in combination with organic phosphonates, organic phosphites, and polyphosphates, resulting in a good synergistic effect. They can function effectively in alkaline conditions and at high concentrations without causing scaling. Polyacrylic acid does not pollute the environment when released. Hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride HPMA is an organic fatty acid polymer with a typical molecular weight of 400–800.
