In mid-December 2007, ExxonMobil Research & Engineering (EMRE) announced that its Methanol-to-Gasoline (MTG) technology would be adopted by DKRW Advanced Fuels as part of DKRW’s coal-to-liquid (CTL) project being built in Medicine Bow, Wyoming, United States. Medicine Bow Fuel and Power Company will own and operate the CTL project. This facility, with a capacity of around 15,000 barrels per day, will utilize the MTG technology, which has been commercially proven; this technology has undergone further improvements since it was first put into commercial use by ExxonMobil in New Zealand 20 years ago. The MTG process converts crude methanol directly into low-sulfur, low-benzene gasoline, which can be sold directly to conventional refineries for use in gasoline blending. Although MTG technology was originally used to process methanol produced from natural gas, the same technology can be applied to methanol produced from other sources such as coal, petroleum coke, or biomass. The Medicine Bow Fuel and Power Company project will use coal gasification to convert syngas into methanol, which will then be converted into gasoline using the MTG process. Converting coal into gasoline through gasification and methanol conversion is **a method to reduce potential pollutants generated from coal, including reducing SOx pollution and captureable CO2. I heard that Yunnan Jiehua Company, in collaboration with Shanxi Coal Research Institute and the Second Chemical Research Institute, has also carried out pilot tests on the conversion of methanol into gasoline, producing qualified gasoline products.
