Liquid hammer generally occurs in two-phase vapor-liquid flow media; when the flow velocity in a pressurized pipe changes suddenly due to some external factor, it causes the pressure inside the liquid to rise and fall rapidly. This alternating pressure acts on the pipe walls, valves, or other pipeline components like a hammer blow. The fundamental reason is that gases can be compressed, whereas liquids cannot be compressed at all. When vapor and liquid coexist, the vapor phase experiences compression and its volume decreases ; Or the vapor phase partially condenses, creating a local vacuum; the liquid quickly flows toward this vacuum area, resulting in intense collisions that generate loud noises and vibrations.
It is mainly due to changes in pressure – this is what is known as water hammer. For 1 kilogram of water and steam, the volume difference is several hundred times; when water is present, its vaporization causes a sudden increase in pipeline pressure, while condensation leads to a sudden drop in pressure. This inevitably results in vibrations, and in severe cases, it can even cause the pipelines to break. It is better for steam to have an appropriate superheat level and to be free of water.
