Direct production from natural gas or conversion from syngas. The former is still at the laboratory stage, with catalysts being sulfates of metals such as Hg and Pt, or specialized metal complexes. The latter has some pilot-scale test results; it basically uses the existing Cu-Zn-Al2O3 catalyst system, and to suit the slurry bed, the catalyst is in the form of micron-sized fine particles
For the production of methanol from syngas, in order to overcome the current Cu-Zn-Al2O3 catalyst system, other catalyst systems such as those based on V, Co, Mo, etc., are being considered.
