Main uses of dimethyl ether: domestic fuel, vehicle fuel (as a substitute for diesel), alternative to acetylene, use in aerosols, industrial raw material, etc
The market for dimethyl ether is now essentially saturated; its main use at present is as a substitute for liquefied gas as a fuel for household use. It is not yet ready for widespread adoption as a fuel for vehicles. There is very limited scope for the use of dimethyl ether in other areas. In the field of civilian fuels, the market potential for dimethyl ether is around 3 million tons (domestic consumption of liquefied petroleum gas is about 20 million tons; assuming that 15 million tons in the central and eastern regions replace 25% of that amount), and the current production capacity is already close to 3 million tons.
The dimethyl ether currently in production is the minor dimethyl ether generated by the 250,000-ton methanol plant; the 830,000 tons of dimethyl ether come from another set of facilities, which include brand-new gasification, low-temperature methanol washing, methanol synthesis, and distillation units
