On June 16, domestic catalysts were used in the 1,800 kt methanol-to-olefins plant; the contract signing ceremony for the procurement of catalysts for China’s key coal chemical project during the 11th Five-Year Plan period – the Shenhua Baotou 1,800 kt methanol-to-olefins (DMTO) project – was held in Dalian. Zhang Tao, director of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed the contract for the first batch of DMTO catalysts on behalf of the institute, together with Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. and CP Group CP Energy Materials (Dalian) Co., Ltd. Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of researchers, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics completed a 10,000-ton-scale industrial trial of DMTO in Shaanxi last June, bringing China’s achievements based on independent intellectual property to a world-leading level. The signing of this contract for the purchase of DMTO catalysts represents another important step forward for China’s coal chemical industry. It is reported that CP Group participated in the DMTO industrial trial in Shaanxi in 2004, and invested in the scale-up production of the DMIO catalyst at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. In November 2005, CP Group signed a contract with the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics for the transfer of DMTO catalysts, obtaining the exclusive right to produce them. The Shenhua Baotou 1,800 kt methanol-to-olefins project was built using the DMTO technology developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, and it received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission in December 2006. The construction of this set of facilities holds significant economic and strategic importance for China in comprehensively utilizing coal resources and diversifying the sources of low-carbon olefin raw materials. Shenhua’s coal-to-olefins project uses catalysts produced by domestic manufacturers, indicating that the key components of methanol-to-olefins production have been localized in China, which holds great strategic significance in opening up new pathways for new energy development in the country. Looking at China’s current large-scale coal-to-methanol projects, almost all of the gasification technologies are controlled by foreign companies such as Shell and Texaco – this is a source of regret for several generations within China’s coal chemical industry. As for China’s MTO and MTP technologies, a favorable situation has emerged with multiple parties working together, including the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Sinopec, China National Chemical Engineering Corporation, and Tsinghua University; in 10 years, it is certain that China will have full control over its MTP and MTO technologies.
