Abroad, the main companies in gasification technology are UGI, Lurgi, Winkler, Shell, Taxaco, GSP; In China, the main types include Ende furnace, ash fusion polymerization, four-nozzle furnace, multi-component slurry furnace, two-stage pulverized coal gasification furnace, and aerospace furnace. Taxaco abroad and multi-material slurries in China are the most widely used; there are numerous industrial installations, they have been adopted rapidly, and long-term stable operation is achievable.

Foreign gasification technology was industrialized as early as the beginning of the 20th century; however, after the 1950s, with the extensive development of natural gas and oil, progress in gasification came to a halt for a time. In the 1970s, an energy crisis arose internationally. Fearing shortages in oil and gas supplies, developed countries brought coal gasification technology back onto the agenda as an alternative energy source and accelerated research into new coal gasification processes. Over the past two decades, many foreign companies have invested heavily in coal gasification combined cycle power generation technologies in order to improve the thermal efficiency of coal-fired power plants and reduce environmental pollution, thereby promoting the development of this technology. A new generation of coal gasification process has been successfully developed, featuring wide adaptability to different coal types, high gasification pressure, large production capacity, high gasification efficiency, and low pollution. Representative examples include Shell’s dry coal powder gasification process in the Netherlands, GE’s water-coal slurry gasification process in the United States (originally known as TEXACO’s water-coal slurry gasification process), DYNEGY’s DESTEC gasification process in the United States, KRUPP UHDE’s PRENFLO process (pressurized K-T method) in Germany, and LURGI’s process in Germany. Among them, the DESTEC gasification process is similar to the GE process, but its performance and experience are inferior to those of GE ; The PRENFLO process is similar to the SCGP technology; there is a demonstration unit available. In 2000, UHDE entered into a technical partnership with Shell to apply the successful experiences of this technology to Shell’s gasification processes ; Although the LURGI process is widely used in industrial installations and comes with extensive operational experience, it is not suitable as a feed gas for ammonia and methanol synthesis due to the high content of CH4 in the gas, the low content of active components (CO+H2), as well as the high levels of tar and phenols in the gas, which complicates wastewater treatment.

As far as I know, SHELL has signed 16 technology transfer agreements across the country, and most of the newly built gasification plants use this technology. In my opinion, the choice of gasification technology is mainly determined by the type or quality of coal we have. No gasification technology is perfect; not all types of coal can be processed using it. Moreover, gasification furnaces are quite delicate – they don’t perform well with coarse grains, and only fine grains work well for them. If you choose gasification technology, you must first determine the type of coal you have, and then select a gasification technique that is suitable for that type of coal.
