A friend asked me to help create a model of a part using AutoCAD, with corresponding text annotations at the bottom of the drawing. Some of these characters are special symbols, such as copyright marks. Because AutoCAD is based on the Windows graphical user interface operating system. Therefore, we can apply the principle of \"what you see is what you get\" by first entering these special characters in word processing software (such as Office Word or WPS Office), and then copying and pasting them into Autocad’s editing interface. However, this method has its drawbacks, such as the inability to quickly obtain the desired size, position, etc. Moreover, after using the copy-paste method into AutoCAD, AutoCAD embeds this special character as an OLE object within it, as shown in Figure 1. This will also invisibly increase the size of the AutoCAD graphic file. Next, taking Autocad 2002 as an example, we will introduce a method for quickly entering special characters using Autocad’s built-in text input tool, namely the character mapping table. Click on the Autocad2002 menu “Draw” -> “Text”; you will see that text can be either multi-line or single-line text, and it is necessary to select multi-line text in this case. At this point, the AutoCAD command prompt asks us to specify the first corner point; we click at the location in the editing interface where special characters need to be entered. The command prompt then asks us to specify parameters such as the diagonal point or height/alignment. At this stage, we move the mouse in the lower right direction to a certain position, as shown in Figure 2. After moving, release the mouse button, and a multi-line text editor window will appear, as shown in Figure 3. If we are able to enter the special characters we need in Notepad or WordPad, then congratulations – by simply clicking the “Enter Text” button in Figure 3, we can easily import character files with a .txt or .rtf extension. This method is naturally very simple and easy to use, but it cannot be applied if these special characters cannot be entered in Notepad or WordPad. If you are unable to enter these special characters in Notepad or WordPad, you can click the “Symbols” button in Figure 4; Autocad includes the four most commonly used special symbols: degrees (°), positive/negative (±), diameter (Φ), and non-breaking space. If the special character we need to enter is not listed, we can select “Other” at the bottom; this will bring up a character mapping table window, as shown in Figure 5. After selecting the font, various Chinese and Western fonts can be chosen; most special symbols are available in Western fonts. Here, select “Arial”, as it contains the majority of special symbols, such as the copyright symbol we needed earlier. After clicking this symbol, click the “Select” button, and you will be able to see this special character behind the field for copying characters. Simply click the “Copy” button, close the character mapping table, and then use the Ctrl+V shortcut key on the Autocad main interface to paste the special characters into the appropriate location there.
