How long can the catalysts used by everyone last, and what should be the exact level of their content? I’ve heard that there is a type of low-mercury catalyst with a content of only 4% – is it feasible to use such a catalyst with the current production methods?
Mercury content in the catalysts used for vinyl chloride synthesis: For new catalysts, those with high mercury content have a level of 11–12.5%, while those with low mercury content have a level of 7–8.5%. In newly built plants, catalysts with high mercury content (11–12.5%) or low mercury content (7–8.5%) can be purchased. Catalysts with low mercury content are used in the front-stage converters, while those with high mercury content are used in the back-stage converters. After the plant starts operating, after 4500 hours of use, the catalysts in the front-stage converters are essentially no longer usable; at this point, the catalysts from the back-stage converters can be moved to the front stage. The catalysts can then be used for another 8500–10000 hours.
The quality of catalysts currently used in our company is as follows: those with a high mercury content have a level of 10–12%, while those with a low mercury content have a level of 8%. The catalysts in the rear converters last for 3,000–4,000 hours; after being switched to the front converters, they can still be used for another 3,000 hours or so. For reference only! ! !
I’ve never encountered a low-mercury catalyst with a content of 4%.
The low-mercury catalyst mentioned above is still in the research stage and has not yet been put into regular production.
