Shanxi Tianji Coal Chemical Group Co., Ltd. originally used Lurgi converter units for its 300,000-ton per year ammonia synthesis process; hydrogen was produced through traditional methods such as wet desulfurization, low-temperature methanol washing, and liquid nitrogen washing for gas purification. This hydrogen, along with nitrogen generated by the air separation unit, was then fed into the synthesis tower to produce ammonia. After the company expanded its synthetic ammonia production capacity from 300,000 tons to 450,000 tons, the gas purification process was upgraded to use the PSA method instead of the traditional wet process; this made it the first facility of its kind in China for large-scale synthetic ammonia production to adopt this technology.
