Xinhua Net Shaanxi Channel, December 26 (Reporter Liang Juan) – Reporters learned on the 26th from the second plenary session of the 11th Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee that the province will intensify efforts to develop the energy and chemical industry base in northern Shaanxi as well as the energy production areas in northern Weihe. The focus of this energy and chemical industry will be on chemical manufacturing, with significant investment being made in key projects such as coal-to-methanol, coal-to-oil, and coal-to-olefins production. Yuan Chunching, governor of Shaanxi Province, said that while steadily expanding the production capacity of energy sources such as coal, oil, and gas, Shaanxi Province is also working to improve its capabilities for the deep processing of resources as well as its technical standards. With international oil prices continuing to rise, developing coal chemical industry holds significant economic value and strategic importance. The development of the coal chemical industry in Shaanxi Province enjoys significant resource advantages and favorable conditions; in the future, Shaanxi will make great efforts to develop industries such as coal-to-methanol, coal-to-oil, and coal-to-olefins. The overall goal of Shaanxi Province’s coal chemical industry is to achieve, by the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan period or by 2012, a production capacity of over 10 million tons of methanol produced from coal, 1 million tons of oil produced from coal, and 3 million tons of olefins produced from coal. In 2008, Shaanxi Province will strive to secure approval for the first phase of Shenhua Dow Coal Chemicals project; substantive progress will be made in the construction of the first-phase industrial demonstration project for coal liquefaction by Yankuang; and efforts will be intensified to advance the 1 million-ton ethylene project in Yan’an.
