Everyone, I have a question: what is the best way to clean the bottles after oil samples have been tested, so that they can be cleaned thoroughly? Especially heavy oil is a headache. It’s still quite troublesome for us to soak it in hot water or wash it with detergent.
Wash it with gasoline and then brush it once more
Let me tell you a method I use often at school; after using it, your oil bottle will be as good as new. First, heat the oil in an oven to drive out as much of it as possible, then use a warm cloth to wipe away any remaining oil. As a final step, place the oil bottle in a muffle furnace and heat it at a temperature of 280–300 degrees – don’t go any higher, or the glass will melt. Of course, for precision glassware such as ground-neck flasks and Erlenmeyer flasks, it is best to wash them by soaking in light oil. When cleaning glassware used for heavy oil in our laboratory, we first wipe away the easily cleanable parts with paper, then rinse it with heated light diesel, followed by gasoline, and finally clean it with a brush.
Apart from distillation flasks, this method probably won’t work for other containers, right?
I recommend a small method that I have used personally: the method from floor 4 is also one that has been tried, but diesel cannot be cleaned properly with gasoline. 1. First, heat to 60–85 degrees to drain out as much excess oil as possible ; 2. Add a small amount of gasoline to the container and place it in a hot water bath at around 80 degrees Celsius; after a few minutes, the container can be thoroughly cleaned. The remaining oil, which is in a thinner state, can be reused. 3. Rinse it with a little cleaning agent (hot). 4. The key step is to neutralize it using acid or base solutions. This is the method I use when conducting experiments with crude oils; you can give it a try, especially when there are many containers involved.
