I’ve now come across some concepts related to side-line production and reflux, but I don’t understand them very well. Why is side-line extraction carried out? ? Is it perhaps because the material composition at that extraction site is the purest? ? What about the mid-section reflux? ? A distillation column equipped with side-line takeoffs, mid-stage cooling reflux, and mid-stage heating is a complex type of distillation column used to separate multi-component mixtures. The separation accuracy required between each side-line component is not high; in facilities for crude oil distillation, mid-stage reflux serves primarily for energy recovery, and it also helps to control the gas-liquid phase loads in different sections of the column.
The purity of the product obtained via side-line extraction is theoretically lower than that of the product obtained from the tower top, but with tower-top extraction, some materials with boiling points lower than that of the product are also extracted, resulting in an impure product! Although the product obtained via side-line extraction has a lower purity, it prevents materials with low boiling points from being extracted together; as a result, the actual product is purer than that obtained from the top of the tower!
It should be determined based on the specifications of the product whether extraction should be carried out through a side stream or from the top of the tower. As 2F mentioned, it is also necessary to evaluate the height of the tower in order to decide whether to use two separate towers for the separation and purification of the product, or whether a side stream extraction method will suffice

There is production from the side stream, and the main reason is that the fractions obtained from it meet our requirements as products; it has nothing to do with whether they are pure or not. Second, having several additional outlets on the side line serves two purposes: it reduces the pressure drop that occurs when a large amount of oil is drawn out at once, and it also allows for an increased production of the desired product as needed. Thirdly, as you mentioned, more thermal energy can be utilized, because the temperature varies depending on the location where extraction takes place.
