For newly introduced catalysts, as the users, how should we conduct inspections? We have only checked their strength; what do other colleagues do in this regard? Is it possible to determine the quality of a catalyst’s activity before it is put into use?
It is best to replace a certain section or the entire catalytic system; smoke conditions must be provided, and the manufacturer should submit a loading plan along with performance guarantees.

It is almost impossible in China to require catalyst suppliers to provide performance guarantee values in the same way as foreign companies do! None of them are willing to do this, because it would surely result in losses for them, forcing them to close down first. The price of catalysts in China is between 20,000 and 24,000 yuan per ton, leaving only a profit of 1,000 to 3,000 yuan per ton. In contrast, the price of catalysts abroad is 3.8 dollars per liter; including taxes, it amounts to around 90,000 yuan per ton. You get what you pay for – foreign manufacturers charge a fee for ensuring the performance of their products, and it’s impossible to expect them to provide such guarantees at such low prices in China.
This statement is inappropriate! The reasons are as follows: 1. Among domestic catalysts, aside from S101 and S108 (which are older models and have low prices), the prices of some other catalysts are not low at all! 2. Domestic catalyst manufacturers claim that the performance of their new catalyst products has reached the level of similar domestic products, and they are very confident about this ； 3. It is a common practice to deduct 10% of the quality guarantee deposit once the performance requirements specified in the technical annex are met. As far as I know, none of the domestic catalyst suppliers offer performance guarantee values. What is the reason? 10% as a quality guarantee deposit is their entire profit – who would dare take such a risk? The price of vanadium catalysts in our country is closely related to the price of vanadium itself. Currently, the price of vanadium is around 120,000 yuan per ton, while the price of catalysts ranges from 20,000 to 24,000 yuan per ton. Its profit margin is very low among catalysts, and under the current circumstances, it is almost impossible to reach foreign standards.
But for catalysts that are not completely replaced but only supplemented, as end-users, we have no way of determining their activity level; in other words, we can only rely on what the manufacturer claims, with no real means to verify anything. I really think it shouldn’t be.
This is actually one of the weaknesses of Chinese manufacturing!
It is a question worth exploring. For newly acquired catalysts, testing their strength and sending them to relevant factories for analysis of their activity and composition is of little use in determining the quality of the catalysts, let alone assessing their performance in actual use. Overemphasizing the strength of catalysts has led to a misconception; in fact, catalysts with very high strength generally have poor activity.
