In chemical production, exhaust gas treatment has always been a significant issue. Could everyone share their experience regarding various methods for treating exhaust gases and the devices used for this purpose?
It is necessary to determine what the main components of the exhaust gases are; if they cannot be reused, they can be released into the atmosphere or burned in a flare system
Briefly speaking, regarding the exhaust gases from coal-to-gas production: these gases are primarily composed of CO2. To address this issue, a specialized recovery system was installed, but the cost of such a system is high and the amount of gas recovered isn’t sufficient to cover the costs. It’s necessary to take environmental considerations into account, as well as the well-being of future generations. The greenhouse effect is already becoming apparent, so process designers should definitely consider this factor. As for the sulfur present in these gases, a sulfur recovery system is required; simple conventional methods are used, and the use of flares is generally avoided (personal preference).
Hydrogenation exhaust gases are recognized as difficult to treat, due to their small volume and the presence of substances such as sulfur and ammonia nitrogen. At present, the flaring method is most commonly used for treating them; it is a simple, practical, and convenient approach. However, it still represents a potential risk. As environmental regulations become stricter, environmental treatment is inevitable. At the current stage, our factory relies on sulfur recovery from coal-based gas for treatment, by using separate recovery units for this purpose.
