The township enterprise where I work is located in the Pingdingshan area of Henan Province (**one of the eight major coal-producing regions**). It plans to engage in the production of olefins from coal. Due to limited own funds, only 200–300 million yuan is available at present; therefore, it intends to start with a pilot project on a scale of around 10,000–20,000 tons. If good economic benefits can be demonstrated, the company can secure financing to pursue large-scale production. =================================================== It has been learned that China’s first industrial-scale pilot plant for producing propylene from methanol using a fluidized bed was put into operation on October 18 in Huainan, Anhui. This major project, jointly developed by the \"New Generation Coal (Energy) Chemical Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance,\" is expected to help bring the industrialization of coal-to-olefins technology in China to fruition at an early date. It is reported that the development of this project mainly consists of three parts: basic research, industrial scale-up, and industrial testing. Based on the pilot-scale research conducted at Tsinghua University, this project scales up the results of those pilot studies to a 10,000-ton scale. Through the operation of industrial testing facilities, it aims to bring the technology related to these 10,000-ton industrial facilities as well as various environmental protection indicators to advanced levels both domestically and internationally. This serves as a technical foundation and training platform for the construction of industrial facilities on a million-ton scale in the future. The scale of this industrial test facility is designed to process 30,000 tons of methanol per year, produce nearly 10,000 tons of propylene annually, and generate 800 tons of liquefied petroleum gas as a by-product. The total investment amounts to around 160 million yuan, with commissioning scheduled for March 2009. ================================================== Based on the information cited above, I would like to ask everyone: Can this demonstration project in Anhui, which involves an investment of 160 million yuan, be profitable? Or put it this way: for a pilot-scale facility that processes 30,000 tons of methanol per year and produces 10,000 tons of ethylene per year, how long will it take to recoup an investment of 160 million? This is what businesses care about the most. As long as there is economic profitability, it is estimated that companies will be able to raise funds on a large scale. Of course, the approval for demonstration projects is also an issue of moderate importance. Finally, on New Year’s Day 2008, I wish the Haichuan Forum continued prosperity, and I also wish all friends on the forum a happy New Year!
