The world’s first set of facilities for producing methanol, a clean energy source that will be used on a large scale, using high-sulfur coal, was put into operation this morning at Guohong Company of Shandong Yankuang Group. This will help reduce the emission of more than 40,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and dust each year. The total investment in this project is 2.217 billion yuan, with annual sales revenue expected to reach 1.09 billion yuan. It is capable of processing 1 million tons of high-sulfur coal per year, producing 500,000 tons of important chemical raw materials such as methanol, sulfur, argon, liquid oxygen, and liquid nitrogen. This transforms the 1 billion tons of high-sulfur coal available in the area from a source of problems into a valuable resource, turning it into methanol – a high-purity clean energy material with a purity of 99.99% ; More than 40,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and dust are reduced each year. The more than 20,000 tons of sulfur extracted by the facility generate over 70 million yuan in revenue for the enterprise each year. Liang Daoguang, chairman and general manager of Yankuang Guohong Chemical Co., Ltd., told reporters that the completion and commissioning of this project signify that China’s technology for the comprehensive utilization of high-sulfur coal and the development of coal-based alcohol ether fuels has reached world-class levels, and that it has entered a stage of large-scale production. Li Yongwu, president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, said in an exclusive interview with a reporter from China Central Television that this project puts an end to the practice of using only high-quality coal in previous coal-to-methanol projects; instead, it utilizes high-sulfur coal, which has posed problems for environmental protection agencies and many companies involved in coal processing. This high-sulfur coal, which is a source of pollution, is transformed into methanol, a high-purity clean energy source with 99.99% purity, thereby achieving optimal utilization of energy resources. According to analyses, Shandong is the province in China with the largest amount of thermal power generation and the most severe sulfur dioxide pollution; the new technology for producing methanol from high-sulfur coal offers a new approach to addressing pollution issues in this region.
