Using residue oil is not economical, as the price of coal is much lower. The cost of producing one kilogram of steam using coal is higher than that of using residue oil. Our atmospheric and vacuum distillation units burn residue, as do many other facilities. However, residue burning is now rare, mainly due to environmental concerns. When we process high-sulfur crude oil, the sulfur content in the residue can exceed 4%, so this practice is not encouraged; nowadays, desulfurized gas is primarily used for combustion.
In enterprises that do not have advanced processing facilities such as catalysis or hydrocracking, the fuel oil used in atmospheric and vacuum distillation units is usually vacuum residue, primarily due to cost considerations. With the advanced processing equipment in place, it is possible to switch to using dry gas and waste oils (such as oil slurry, coker wax oil, oily wastewater, etc.). When burning vacuum residue oil, pay attention to the nozzle design to ensure good atomization.
Under normal conditions, the atmospheric and vacuum distillation furnace in our plant uses gas as fuel; in special cases, it burns vacuum residue; Under normal conditions, steam boilers are fueled by gas as a backup; they can also use a mixture of reduced residue oil and cracked slurry oil as fuel.

Our polyester heat transfer furnace is used to burn viscosified residue oil; it is a top-firing furnace with only one burner. Switching to gas fuel cannot increase the heating capacity, so currently it can only burn viscosified residue oil, which causes significant air pollution.
The use of such residue as fuel should be considered from economic, practical, and operational perspectives. When the density of the crude oil being processed is not very high and there is a shortage of gas or natural gas, vacuum residue is usually used directly as fuel. If the density of the crude oil is high, such as in the case of Liaohe oil, and there is a lack of gas or natural gas, visbreaking residue is generally used as fuel, as vacuum residue has too high a viscosity and tends to coking!
The atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit uses residue oil in its furnaces; during catalyst startup, gas is used as fuel. Since the boiler also operates, we maintain the boiler in operation, while the atmospheric and vacuum distillation section uses gas as fuel.
