Our company is planning to use submersible pumps for the packaging of liquid chlorine, but we find that installing such pumps is quite complicated; moreover, it requires the addition of two intermediate tanks, which increases the risk of leaks and poses additional safety hazards. Maintenance is also difficult. According to some manufacturers, magnetic pumps don’t perform very well either. It is recommended to use a liquid chlorine shielded pump, as this can prevent the accumulation of nitrogen trichloride in the liquid chlorine storage tank.
In most cases in China, liquid chlorine submersible pumps are used; shielded pumps can also be employed, but the process is more complex.
Our company uses shielded pumps, and from practical use on site, their performance seems to be good. It should be noted, however, that shielded pumps should not be started and stopped frequently, otherwise it will be difficult to ensure their performance and lifespan.
From the perspectives of production operations, maintenance convenience, safe operation, and investment costs, it is still better to use liquid chlorine shielded pumps. 1. If a submersible pump is used, a reasonable design involves adding vertical packaging tanks in addition to the storage tank; the submersible pump is installed at the top of these tanks. Generally, two sets of packaging tanks are provided to ensure continuous operation. 2. Once the submersible pump needs to be repaired, the liquid chlorine in the storage tank must be emptied by depressurization, and then the tank filled with nitrogen, so that the submersible pump can be lifted out for maintenance. 3. Even during continuous operation, chlorine leaks often occur due to the numerous potential leakage points in the packaging system, particularly in components such as submersible pumps and packaging tanks ; 4. Local platforms should be provided around the packaging tank to facilitate operation ; A manual hoist is required at the top for loading and unloading the submersible pump. 5. Due to the adoption of this scheme, a contaminated chlorine treatment system must be installed to regularly discharge the liquid chlorine at the bottom, which contains high concentrations of nitrogen trichloride. Liquid chlorine shielded pumps or magnetic pumps do not have this drawback; nitric trichloride does not accumulate in such systems, as it is carried away along with the liquid chlorine, preventing accumulation in low-lying areas or spaces. However, liquid chlorine shielded pumps or magnetic pumps need to be installed in pits, and to prevent chlorine gas from accumulating at the bottom, toxic gas sensors and compressed air purge lines must be installed. This solution is to be adopted in the first-phase project of Huasheng Company in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone; its liquid chlorine serves as the main raw material for large-scale MDI, PC, TDI production facilities such as those owned by BAYER and BASF, making it a factor that has a significant impact on the entire operation.
