Previously, our company’s chimney used for producing sulfuric acid from 100,000 tons of sulfur also often emitted acidic sludge; the problem lay mainly with the demister – domestic stainless steel demisters were used, and their effectiveness in removing acidic mist was poor, resulting in noticeable white smoke coming from the chimney. Later, glass fiber mist eliminators were used; the acidic sludge disappeared, and there was no more smoke from the chimney.
Stainless steel mist eliminators or fiberglass mist eliminators? It wasn’t explained clearly – what’s the difference?
The main difference is that glass fiber has a better dirt removal efficiency and, comparatively, a stronger ability to capture fine-particle acid mist.
If more detailed information is provided, everyone will be able to offer better suggestions!
1. Generally, it is due to the mist eliminator being dirty, with severe blockages in certain areas; this leads to excessive local gas velocity and thus flooding. 2. An excessive amount of acid being sprayed, or high resistance in the towers of the dry absorption system, can also cause this issue under high-load operating conditions. These problems need to be identified and addressed one by one. 3. In some plants, the chimney is connected directly to the absorption tower, and this situation occurs quite frequently.
From a long-term perspective, it is best to install an exhaust gas absorption device. As for the issue raised by the original poster, I would add one more point regarding the 6th floor: control the acidity at both mild and high levels
