What are the requirements for installing explosion-proof membranes? For example, an explosion-proof membrane needs to be installed on the exhaust pipe at the bottom of the tower. Given that the tower is quite tall and the exhaust pipe runs from the top of the tower to the ground, and considering the need for maintenance of such membranes, I wonder whether it would be possible to install the membrane at a position closer to the ground, with the opening of the membrane facing horizontally. Is this feasible? Why?
The purpose of installing a rupture disc is to protect the tower. If it is installed at a distance far from the tower, the pressure drop becomes significant, which hinders effective venting; therefore, it is recommended to install it at the top of the tower.
An operating platform is added to the top of the tower; all the factories I’ve seen are equipped with steel platforms. An additional pair of flanges is installed on the exhaust pipe at the top of the tower to facilitate disassembly.
If overpressure in the exhaust pipe occurs frequently, ease of maintenance can be taken into consideration; however, the set pressure for the explosion vent must be determined through further calculations, and the direction of the vent opening needs to be considered to ensure safety in the event of overpressure rupture. If the number of times the exhaust pipe experiences overpressure is low, it is better to place it at the top of the tower. Personal opinion
Blowout valves are generally suitable for use in reactors and other vessels where pressure changes rapidly, in order to protect the equipment from damage; they must be installed near the top of the vessel.
