As is well known, excessive shutdowns are detrimental to the lifespan of the membranes and electrodes; therefore, in order to extend their service life as much as possible, it is necessary to maintain continuous and stable operation. In foreign companies with high levels of operational efficiency in ion membrane caustic soda production, there are usually only 2-3 abnormal shutdowns per year, which is why these companies are able to achieve a membrane operating life of 8 years. The longest operating period here was 210 days, from November 3, 2006, to June 12, 2007. During this period, all system parameters have remained stable, especially those of the cell system, with almost no change in cell voltage (aside from the influence of cell temperature). On June 12, harmonic issues caused the UPS used to power the instrumentation system to burn out, resulting in an emergency shutdown of the system.
Our factory is new, and due to the impact of the subsequent PVC plant, as well as that of the thermal power plant, electrical equipment, and instruments, our electrochemical cells have to be shut down approximately 4 times a year.

Personally, I feel that it is more difficult to operate continuously and stably in summer; in June and July 2007, we experienced 3 shutdowns due to harmonics, external power outages, and lightning strikes respectively.

Our plant started operation in 2005, with 33 shutdowns; In 06, 19 stops ; 21 times parked in 07. (including maintenance)

It’s great; I’ve finally found a kindred spirit! We started driving in early 2007, and there were 13 instances of shutdowns that year; 3 of those were due to issues with the device itself, while the rest were caused by problems with the thermoelectric systems, air compression stations, instruments, and related maintenance tasks.
I don’t entirely agree with the original poster’s view. Of course, frequent starting and stopping of the equipment does affect the lifespan of the ion exchange membrane, but I disagree with the claim that a membrane can last 8 years if it is stopped for only two or three times a year. The companies mentioned by the other posters have too many instances of equipment shutdowns, which indicates problems in their production management or planning. In China, electrolyzers that are shut down once a year for major repairs have a lifespan that is only half that of those used abroad (in terms of economic lifespan). There are many factors that affect the lifespan of ion exchange membranes, so let’s continue the discussion

How can there be over 20 stops in a single-slot parking? Change the membrane?
On September 15, 2007, the plant was shut down for 4 hours due to a power outage in the external grid; on December 10, an accident in the evaporation system caused the transformer to trip, which in turn led to the automatic shutdown of the rectifier system. In total, the plant was shut down twice.
Since we started operations in August 2007, there have been over 10 shutdowns. Some of these were due to instability in the chlorine compressor, while others were caused by power outages.
