Manganese steel has a rather peculiar and interesting behavior: when 2.5–3.5% manganese is added to steel, the resulting low-manganese steel becomes as brittle as glass and breaks easily upon being struck. However, if more than 13% manganese is added to create high-manganese steel, it becomes both hard and ductile. When high-manganese steel is heated to a light orange color, it becomes very soft and easy to work with for various processing tasks. Additionally, it has no magnetism and is not attracted to magnets.
