The most important use is in the production of alloys – manganese steel. Manganese steel has a rather peculiar and interesting behavior: when 2.5–3.5% manganese is added to steel, the resulting low-manganese steel becomes as brittle as glass and breaks easily upon being struck. However, if more than 13% manganese is added to create high-manganese steel, it becomes both hard and ductile. When high-manganese steel is heated to a light orange color, it becomes very soft and easy to work with for various processing tasks. Additionally, it has no magnetism and is not attracted to magnets. Today, manganese steel is widely used to manufacture components that are subject to wear, such as steel grinders, ball bearings, and the buckets of bulldozers and excavators, as well as ferromanganese rails and bridges
