Benzene can damage the bone marrow, reducing the numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, as well as causing chromosomal abnormalities, which can lead to leukemia or even aplastic anemia. Benzene can cause severe bleeding, thereby suppressing the function of the immune system and allowing diseases to take hold. Some studies have indicated that the incubation period for benzene in the body can be as long as 12–15 years. When women inhale excessive amounts of benzene, it can cause irregular menstruation that lasts for months, and their ovaries may shrink. The effects on fetal development and male fertility are not yet clear. When pregnant animals are exposed to benzene, it leads to low birth weight in the offspring, delayed bone development, and bone marrow damage. It is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified it as a carcinogen. Exposure limits: * China MAC 40 mg/m3 (dermal) * USA ACGIH 10 ppm, 32 mg/m3 TWA; OSHA 1 ppm, 3.2 mg/m3 Toxicity: * LD50: 3306 mg/kg (oral, rats) ; 48 mg/kg (dermal administration in mice) * LC50: 10,000 ppm for 7 hours (inhalation in rats). Of course, sensitivity to benzene varies from person to person due to differences in health status and exposure conditions. When the smell of benzene is detected, its concentration is around 1.5 ppm, and at this point, the risk of poisoning should be taken into consideration.
