Recently, reporters learned from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences that a series of multi-functional biodiesel quality improvers developed by its Oil Crops Research Institute have, for the first time both domestically and internationally, successfully applied antioxidant and low-temperature flow improvement technologies to biodiesel products, thereby overcoming the two major technical barriers in current biodiesel production. Recently, the biodiesel quality improvement technology and the multi-functional, high-efficiency modifier developed by the institute’s Oil Research Department were approved by **the relevant authorities. At present, China mainly uses waste oils as raw materials to produce biodiesel. Due to the complex composition of these raw materials, the resulting biodiesel suffers from two major quality issues. First, it contains a large amount of unsaturated double bonds that are prone to oxidation; this not only reduces its calorific value but also leads to the formation of acidic substances that corrode the metal components of engines. Additionally, the oxides generated cannot burn completely, resulting in black smoke and environmental pollution ; Secondly, low temperatures can cause crystallization and gelation, which affects the fuel supply in the engine’s fuel supply system; it also impacts the transportation and storage of biodiesel. Due to these two major issues, the use of biodiesel in our country remains limited to ordinary fuels such as boiler fuel, and it cannot be used consistently as a fuel for vehicles. According to R&D experts, the addition of multi-functional and high-efficiency modifiers can extend the oxidation induction period of biodiesel, enabling it to meet or exceed the quality standards for biodiesel products set by the European Union and China ; It significantly improves the oxidative stability and low-temperature flowability of biodiesel products, enabling conventional biodiesel to be used stably as a vehicle fuel and expanding the range of seasons and regions in which it can be utilized ; It has broad compatibility with biodiesel made from various raw materials, is easy to add, and the addition ratio is only 0.01%–0.1% ; It has low production costs, making it highly valuable for promotion and capable of driving industrial development. Based on the current market price of ordinary biodiesel at 5,000 yuan per ton, the use of this product, combined with sales at the current wholesale price of 0# diesel, can increase the value of each ton of ordinary biodiesel by around 10%.
It also needs to be verified in the actual development of the biodiesel industry. At the moment, it can only be said to be in an accumulation phase.
