Just as traditional energy oil prices soared to more than 100 US dollars per barrel, Shandong Haiyang Nuclear Power Station, the country's largest nuclear power project as a new energy source, was approved to start full construction on December 31, 2007. For the Shandong Haiyang Nuclear Power Project, the first unit is scheduled to undergo negative excavation of the nuclear island in September this year. The first tank of concrete will be poured in September 2009 and will be put into commercial operation in 2014. The total construction period is 77 months. The project is invested and constructed by Shandong Provincial Trust, China Guodian, China Nuclear Industry and other companies, with a total investment of 60 billion yuan. The planned capacity of the nuclear power unit is 6 million kilowatts. The project signed a nuclear island procurement framework contract with the US-based Westinghouse Consortium for the first phase of the Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant, and will use AP1000 third-generation nuclear power technology. This is by far the most advanced third-generation nuclear power technology in the world. The power flow of Shandong power grid has always been dominated by power transmission from west to east. The original power structure was dominated by thermal power. Coal production cannot be self-balanced. Transportation pressure is huge. Power points are mainly concentrated in the southwest and west. With the shortage of conventional energy sources such as coal and oil and the increasing pressure on environmental protection, the development of nuclear power in the Jiaodong Peninsula has become an inevitable choice. Nuclear power is a clean energy source with mature technology. Compared with thermal power, nuclear power does not emit sulfur dioxide, soot, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide. It is an effective way for the power industry to reduce pollutant emissions and is also an important measure to slow down the global greenhouse effect. Experts once told reporters that if all nuclear power was used in Shanghai, the nuclear raw materials needed for a year would only be one train car, but the coal resources needed for thermal power would require countless train cars. A research expert from Shandong Electric Power Design Institute analyzed that the cost of nuclear power is currently slightly higher than that of thermal power.
