Does anyone with expertise know whether the civil engineering field in the chemical industry is highly specialized? What are the industry standards that apply? I’d appreciate some guidance!
Although civil engineering in the chemical industry is not given much attention, it serves as the foundation. A compressor cannot function without a foundation, and workshop equipment cannot operate without a factory building. The field of civil engineering is highly specialized; unlike residential buildings, industrial buildings have complex structures that make construction challenging. What is generally followed are **standards; the industry standards are those issued by China State Construction Engineering Corporation.
Characteristics of civil engineering in the chemical industry: 1. In terms of individual units, the scale is small. There are very few extra-large high-rise structures 2. In terms of projects, there are many individual units, and their structures vary. 3. In terms of proportion, it is small. In general chemical plants, the cost of civil works accounts for 4-5% of the total project cost4. In terms of professional status, it plays a supporting role among the electrical instruments for process piping equipment, yet it is essential, as the equipment and pipelines cannot float in the air. 5. Compared to civil buildings, coordination with various specialties is more important. 6. In terms of professionalism, aside from elements used in higher-level applications, there are many structures with chemical engineering characteristics, so it can be said that the level of professionalism is very high. 7. When it comes to standards, national standards/construction standards are still very commonly used. But petrochemical and chemical standards are also used.
