Application of Industrial Ethernet in Sewage Treatment Control Systems Author: Zhuoyue Xintong Electronics (Beijing) Co., Ltd. I. Project Overview With economic development, accelerated industrial modernization, and high population density, urban water consumption and sewage discharge are increasing continuously, exacerbating water shortages and water quality pollution. Therefore, countries around the world attach great importance to water treatment, and this is especially true in our country. In a sewage treatment project in Guangdong, due to the scattered layout of the equipment in the water treatment system, using traditional control systems required the installation of a large number of cables, which posed significant difficulties in terms of design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance. Therefore, industrial Ethernet technology was adopted in this control system to address these issues. II. Overview of the Solution: Given the large distances between the various stations in this wastewater treatment plant, as well as the high requirements regarding the data exchange capabilities and real-time performance of the equipment, the Xueyue Xintong TSC Carat5008FC2 series of industrial Ethernet switches were selected to form a fiber-optic redundant self-healing ring network. This network provides fast and redundant Ethernet channels for monitoring and data collection at each station. III. Equipment Configuration: Given the high requirements for link reliability and redundancy in this project, the Excellence Communication TSC Carat5008FC2 series of industrial Ethernet switches are used to establish a redundant ring network. The TSC Carat5008FC2 industrial Ethernet switch belongs to the TSC Carat5008FC2 series of industrial Ethernet switches. These devices are designed for industrial customers and support a redundant ring network topology. Taking into account the high requirements for reliability in industrial control systems, they utilize TSC’s proprietary \"Supreme-Ring\" ring network protocol, which ensures that link failure recovery times are within 300 milliseconds. Built with a fully enclosed metal folded-crease heat dissipation structure, these switches are suitable for use in harsh environments such as those with high temperatures, dust, and strong electromagnetic interference. Special model aircraft are better suited for underwater operation. The ring network configuration of this model is highly intelligent; no on-site PC setup is required. The use of intelligent confirmation switches not only simplifies the on-site work for network engineers but also ensures the safety and reliability of the communication system. Different customers such as factories, power plants, and the military can choose this series of products according to their own needs. IV. Features of the Solution: Automatic redundant backup for links: The Carat5008FC2 switch provides automatic redundant backup, capable of automatically negotiating paths to the nearest node. In the event that a connection is damaged, the network topology is reconfigured, and it takes only 300 milliseconds to restore normal network operation. It supports industrial voltage ranges of 18–36VDC. Long transmission distances: The ring structure utilizes optical fiber media, which features low transmission losses, thereby allowing longer transmission distances without the need for repeaters. The maximum distance between adjacent stations using multi-mode fiber is 2KM, while with single-mode fiber it can reach 40–75KM; the overall coverage area is up to 100KM. High bandwidth: The ring network has a transmission bandwidth of 100Mbps, and thanks to new multi-data processing technologies, the network can maintain a high bandwidth even under heavy load conditions. High reliability: The Carat50 series is designed for demanding industrial applications, with a wide operating temperature range of -20°C to 70°C. Its robust alloy casing not only protects against dust and high levels of vibration and shock but also shields against external electromagnetic interference. It features redundant dual DC power inputs as well as an easy installation method: the Carat50 series of industrial Ethernet switches support installation on industrial DIN-rail systems as well as in wall-mounted configurations.
