I would like to ask the experts here: The following are the material consumption figures for each step in the production of polyvinyl alcohol, as taken from a book. I wonder if they are correct.Step 1: Materials for synthesizing vinyl acetate – acetylene: 322 kilograms, acetic acid: 720 kilograms, catalyst: 4.5 kilograms, fresh water: 125 tons, electricity: 200 KW per hour, steam: 2.8 T/h.
Step 2: The vinyl acetate produced in Step 1 is mixed with the initiator diisobutyronitrile, and after 4–6 hours of polymerization, 2/3 of polyvinyl acetate (PVAC) is obtained.
Step 3: Synthesis of PVA. The specific ratio of materials used is as follows: polyvinyl acetate:methanol:sodium hydroxide:water = 1:2:0.01:0.002.
Question 1: When acetylene is synthesized from calcium carbide, how much acetylene can be produced from one ton of calcium carbide?
Question 2: Are the ratios of the various materials used in Step 3 correct? How much polyvinyl acetate is needed to produce one ton of PVA? Moreover, according to this ratio, two tons of methanol are required to produce one ton of PVA – is that too much? Will all of this methanol be consumed?
