In the early days, the raw materials used for producing activated carbon were wood, nut shells, or animal bones; later on, coal became the main material. Activated carbon is obtained through carbonization and activation processes. The production methods include: ① Steam and gas activation method. Carbon is activated using water vapor or carbon dioxide at 850–900°C. ②Chemical activation method. Activated carbon can be obtained either by using the gas released by the activator or by impregnating the raw material with the activator, followed by high-temperature treatment. Applications of activated carbon: Based on its adsorption properties, activated carbon is primarily used to remove pollutants from water, for decolorization, and to filter and purify liquids and gases. It is also employed in air purification, in the recovery of waste gases (such as the recovery of benzene in the chemical industry), And in the recovery and refining of precious metals (for example, the absorption of gold).
