Hydrogen is recovered from the synthetic off-gas using membrane separation; during operation, it is necessary to prevent back pressure in the membrane tubes, and the pressure of the permeated hydrogen must not be higher than the pressure entering the membrane. Why? Also, the pressure of the exhaust gas without decompression should be roughly the same as the pressure entering the membrane, right?
The pressure of the permeating hydrogen cannot be higher than the pressure in the membrane tube, as the driving force for gas separation by membranes is the pressure gradient; if the pressure of the permeating hydrogen is higher than that in the membrane tube, separation cannot take place! ! ! The pressure of the exhaust gas should be lower than that of the membrane module! ! !
The pressure at the tail end will be slightly lower; there is a pressure drop during the flow, and the flow rate also decreases
It’s actually very simple; if you take a close look at the instructions for the membrane device, you’ll understand why. For the hydrogen separation membranes commonly used today, if the pressure of the permeate gas is higher than the inlet pressure, it can cause permanent damage to the membrane. That’s why membrane manufacturers always remind that the pressure on the permeate side must not be higher than the pressure on the feed side. It will also remind that if the membrane system needs to be depressurized, it must be done from the permeate side, not from the feed side.
