Regarding the frequent steam leakage that occurs during the use of ball valves and globe valves, what should be done once they break down? It would be a shame to sell these valves as scrap; guys with experience, let’s share our insights.
Basically, everything can be recycled. In most cases, items can be reused after some repairs; unless there are defects or problems with the valve body, such as cracks, sand holes, or damaged flanges, they can generally be repaired. By tightening the gland and adding packing, parts from valves of the same type or model can be recombined to turn waste into treasure. Gate valves can be reused to a large extent, while it’s harder to say the same for ball valves – after long use, their spherical surfaces become worn out, rendering them practically useless
Generally, gate valves can be disassembled and repaired as long as they are not severely damaged. By grinding the sealing surfaces, replacing components, and changing the packing, it is possible to restore them to good condition; it is very rare for them to need to be discarded outright! (It is necessary to purchase some simple grinding and maintenance tools.)
