When selecting a feed water pump, what are the criteria for choosing between a steam-driven pump and an electric pump?
When selecting a pump, only head and flow rate are generally considered. A steam-driven pump is used to ensure that the electric feed water pump can still operate in the event of a power outage!

The choice of pump depends on the actual circumstances. If there is an adequate supply of steam, steam-driven pumps are generally used as they help save energy; on the other hand, if there is no steam available and only electricity is present, then electric pumps are the only option. For large boilers, both steam pumps and electric pumps are usually used. As far as I know, some factories use three electric pumps along with two steam pumps.

If the boiler has a high capacity, I recommend using a feed water pump driven by a steam turbine. This ensures stable operation, preventing shutdowns due to power outages or voltage fluctuations. Additionally, it helps save on external electricity costs, resulting in lower operating expenses for the boiler and greater economic efficiency. Of course, when driving the equipment, if there is no steam source available, it is recommended to use a pump driven by an electric motor to start the boiler. In the design of large power plants, the steam-driven feed water pump can also achieve speed control by utilizing steam sources with different pressures and temperatures, which is very convenient.
In my opinion, there should be a power threshold regarding whether steam-driven or electric pumps should be used for boiler feed water pumps; that is, pumps with a certain power level or above can use steam-driven pumps, while if the pump’s power is very low, steam-driven pumps cannot be used even if a steam source is available.
For small facilities, small pumps, and those with special requirements regarding the production process, pneumatic pumps are usually used as a backup if conditions permit. As for large power stations such as power plants, decisions are generally made based on cost-effectiveness...
