SunPine develops tall oil refining to produce biodiesel SunPine announced at the end of 2007 that it would develop a tall oil refinery to produce biodiesel or renewable diesel feedstock. It is planned to build a production unit in Pite, Sweden, so that crude tall oil (CTO) can be used for further hydrogenation in the refinery into renewable diesel components, or purified into standard EN14214 biodiesel. The unit will have a crude tall diesel capacity of 100,000 m3/year. The device was constructed in early 2008 and put into production in 2009. Crude tall oil is a by-product of kraft (sulfate) processing of pine wood for papermaking. Crude tall oil begins as tall oil soap separated from the recovered black liquor during the kraft (sulfate) papermaking process. Tall oil soap is acidified to produce crude tall oil. Crude tall oil contains 40% to 50% fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid, 5% to 10% sterols, other alcohols and other neutral components. Usually, crude tall oil (CTO) is first removed asphalt, and then is distilled and modified to produce higher value products such as tall oil fatty acid (TOFA) and tall oil rosin (TOR). The process developed jointly by the Canadian Center for Minerals and Energy Technology (CANMET) and the Saskatchewan Research Society to convert tall oil into higher value products involves simultaneous catalytic hydrogenation and cracking of deasphalted tall oil (DPTO). The resulting product is called SuperCetane.
