I would like to ask the experts: what are the differences in usage between packed towers and plate towers? (In which situations are plate towers suitable, and in which situations are packed towers suitable?) ) What are the key operating considerations for these two types of columns when used for distillation purification? I am looking to obtain high-purity trichlorosilane (with 5 nines or higher purity) for use in polysilicon production. Which type of tower would be suitable for this purpose? Are the key operating principles the same regardless of the tower used?
Comparison between packed towers and plate towers: 1) A packed tower is a continuous gas-liquid mass transfer device, where the two phases are in continuous counterflow contact for mass and heat transfer, and the concentrations of the components in the gas and liquid phases change continuously along the height of the tower. In a plate tower, mass and heat transfer occur through countercurrent contact between the gas and liquid phases layer by layer, with the concentrations of the components in these phases changing in a stepwise manner along the height of the tower. 2) Advantages of packed towers: 1. Simple structure. 2. Low pressure drop (large-size packing). 3. It is suitable for handling corrosive materials, materials that easily form foam, and vacuum operations. Disadvantages of packed towers: 1. Large volume and heavy weight. 2. Traditional packing has a low mass transfer efficiency and poor operational stability. 3. Not suitable for handling dirty, dusty, material containing solid particles, or materials prone to scaling. 3) Currently, plate towers are primarily used in polysilicon production, especially as polysilicon production lines are expanded; however, packed towers are also used for polysilicon production
A few additional points: 1. Compared to tray towers, packed towers have a lower liquid holdup, are easier to manufacture, and result in a lower overall pressure drop; they are particularly suitable for distillation processes that require high vacuum levels. 2. For substances with high specific gravity and high viscosity, distillation packed columns have advantages, but the efficiency of the packing must be taken into account; when the column diameter is large, a liquid distributor must be used to improve packing efficiency. 3. There are also many types of packing: structured packing, unstructured packing, and so on; the choice of packing should be determined based on the specific manufacturing process. The operational differences between these two types of towers are not significant, as their operational flexibility is quite similar. Since I have not worked with trichlorosilane, I am unable to give an opinion on this matter!
I’ve started learning it. I know that the pressure loss in a packed tower is higher, but the height of a packed tower is generally greater.
If the tower diameter is less than 3 ft, a packed tower is used instead of a plate tower. 0.9144m
Packed towers are more efficient and have greater elasticity, but they experience a higher pressure drop.
