The construction plan for the West-to-East Gas Pipeline Project Phase II has been basically finalized. With a total length of 8,794 kilometers, it was learned at the 2008 China LNG International Conference held on the 16th that the plan for this project has been essentially settled. The total investment required is estimated to be 143.49 billion yuan (excluding tariffs and value-added tax), with one main pipeline and 8 branch pipelines, giving a total pipeline length of 8,794 kilometers. According to Hou Chuangye, deputy general manager of the Natural Gas and Pipelines Division of China National Petroleum Corporation, as planned, the main pipeline of West-East Gas Pipeline Project II enters China through the Horgos port in Xinjiang, passes through Dushanzi and Urumqi, where it intersects with the West-East Gas Pipeline Line at Hongliu. From there it heads east via Jiuquan, Shandan, and Wuwei; after crossing the Yellow River in Zhongwei, Ningxia, it separates from the West-East Gas Pipeline Project I line. It then proceeds southeast through Xi’an, Nanchang, and Ganzhou, eventually reaching Guangzhou. The total length of the main line is 4,945 kilometers. The branch lines include Xinjiang Lunnan-Turpan, Ningxia Zhongwei-Shaanxi Jingbian, Henan Luoyang-Jiangsu Xuzhou, Jiangxi Nanchang-Shanghai, Jiangxi Zhangshu-Hunan Xiangtan, Guangdong Wengyuan-Shenzhen, Guangdong Guangzhou-Guangxi Nanning, and Guangdong Zhaoqing-Zhanjiang. The total length of branches and main lines is 3,849 kilometers. Hou Chuangye said that according to the plan, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project Phase II would begin transporting gas in 2010, with a gas transport volume of 30 billion cubic meters by 2012. Hou Chuangye also said that to ensure the safe supply of gas along the Second West-East Gas Pipeline, relevant authorities have conducted resource assessments as well as exploration and development planning for the Tarim and Changqing gas fields located along the pipeline route in China. Through analysis, it can be concluded that the Tarim and Changqing gas fields possess the resource foundation necessary to increase reserves and production; in 2015, in addition to ensuring supply to the Shaanxi-Beijing pipeline, they were also able to provide over 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year as a backup supply for the West-East Gas Transmission Line 2.
