Firstly, it can be used as a domestic fuel. Dimethyl ether has very low toxicity; it contains oxygen itself, burns completely, and its combustion exhaust meets **health standards** ； At room temperature, the pressure of dimethyl ether liquefied gas meets the requirements for existing liquefied petroleum gas, and the storage equipment as well as household stoves can be used interchangeably with those for liquefied petroleum gas. In addition to being used alone, it can also be mixed with city gas, natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas. Given the current situation in which large-scale use in vehicles has not been promoted, this represents the main avenue for achieving substantial production volumes of dimethyl ether at present. Once the corresponding **standards are established, the use of dimethyl ether as a fuel for civilian applications will experience rapid growth. 　　Secondly, dimethyl ether can be used as a fuel alternative to diesel in vehicles. Dimethyl ether has a high cetane number (55–60), which is 27% higher than that of diesel; it also contains a high amount of oxygen, giving it good combustion properties. These characteristics make it highly suitable for compression-ignition engines, thus rendering it an ideal alternative fuel to diesel. Existing diesel engines can be modified only slightly in order to use dimethyl ether as fuel. However, at present, there are also a lack of relevant **standards** for the use of dimethyl ether as a vehicle fuel, and facilities such as gas stations and transportation systems have not yet been standardized. However, with the commissioning of dimethyl ether production facilities with a capacity of millions of tons, the ex-factory price of dimethyl ether is expected to drop to around 2,000 yuan per ton, at which point its price advantage over household liquefied petroleum gas and vehicle diesel can be realized. ——The application of dimethyl ether is restricted by the lack of supporting infrastructure and standards. The development of the dimethyl ether industry is a systematic endeavor that encompasses various aspects such as technology research and development, standard setting, industrial layout, and promotion and application. At present, although the existing and potential production capacity for dimethyl ether in China is substantial, the related supporting facilities and standards still lag behind production needs. According to statistics, by 2010, there were plans to build methylene dimoxide production facilities with a capacity of 9.82 million tons in China, in addition to another 8.57 million tons worth of projects that were under planning or in the process of attracting investment. How to make use of such a large production capacity is an issue that must be addressed to ensure the sustainable development of China’s methylene dimoxide industry. 　　Overall, the application of dimethyl ether is the main issue facing the sustainable and healthy development of China’s dimethyl ether industry. In addition to the need for scientific and uniform standards to regulate various aspects such as transportation, storage, packaging, use, and environmental testing, it is also necessary to dispel the concerns of end-users, both for domestic and automotive applications, regarding their safety and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, the dimethyl ether industry should be promoted actively while also undergoing scientific evaluation; it cannot be developed blindly.
