Among pressure vessel heat exchangers, there are some types with double tube sheets. I would like to ask whether the weld between the smaller tube sheet that is connected to the cylinder and the cylinder itself can be classified as Category C or Category D
I have some objections to what was said above; it generally falls under category C, as this is clearly not a buttweld. It can also be classified as Category D, that is, a tube sheet with flange slots for connection. I didn’t know it could be classified as Category B.

The small tube sheet refers to the tube sheet that is welded to the shell-side cylinder. Based on the author’s description, I cannot determine whether they are referring to the connection between the shell tube and the tube sheet or between the liquid collection tank and the tube sheet; in either case, a butt joint design is used. Currently, design firms tend to design this by using two forged tube sheets that are shaped into concave forms for welding, with the area in between serving as the liquid collection tank. Manufacturers do not use butt joints unless the customer has specific requirements, as this increases the cost of the tube sheet by more than 30%. Still, some design institutes design the tube sheet here according to Appendix G of 151 – it’s something like G2c I think (can’t remember exactly), the type with shoulders on both sides
After reading your conversation, I don’t understand how categories C and D are classified.^_^ Could someone please give some guidance and explain this concept to me?
