Why do some double-end face mechanical seals use both oil and water for cooling and lubrication? Why not use oil for everything, or water for everything?
It should be related to the operating conditions and the medium.
For water cooling, it’s definitely jacket cooling; for oil cooling, flushing can be used

Double-end face mechanical seals are designed primarily to ensure zero leakage; they serve to isolate and collect any leaked fluid, and are available in both pressurized and non-pressurized versions; Whether to use oil or water as the isolation fluid is determined by the medium; alcohol can also be used, with the main consideration being that the isolation fluid does not contaminate the medium.

The water and oil here serve as isolation fluids for the mechanical seal; their selection is determined based on the medium inside the tank, in order to prevent the isolation fluid from entering the tank in case of internal leakage and contaminating the product. As for the fluid flowing through the coil, it is the cooling circulating water of the mechanical seal pressure retention tank, which is used to cool the isolation liquid inside the tank.
Water cooling takes place in the water jacket, while seal oil is used to cool the sealing surfaces; they cannot be used interchangeably
