Companies such as Sinopec and China National Coal Group have jointly established a large-scale coal chemical enterprise in Ordos, named Zhongtian Hechuang. An investment of 42 billion is planned, and upon completion the facility will have a production capacity of 20 million tons per year for coal, 4.2 million tons per year for methanol, and 3 million tons per year for dimethyl ether. As an emerging alternative energy source, dimethyl ether has a very promising future! Under the same temperature conditions, the saturated vapor pressure of dimethyl ether is lower than that of liquefied petroleum gas, making its storage and transportation safer compared to liquefied petroleum gas. The lower explosion limit of dimethyl ether in air is twice that of liquefied petroleum gas, making it safer to use as a fuel compared to liquefied petroleum gas. The calorific value and theoretical combustion temperature of the dimethyl ether premix are both higher than those of liquefied petroleum gas. As a new type of renewable clean energy source, it boasts advantages such as complete combustion, high thermal efficiency, and low emissions of harmful gases (its exhaust emissions meet standards exceeding Euro III). It can be mixed with gasoline and natural gas in any proportion to improve combustion performance, and is regarded as the most ideal alternative energy source for the 21st century, offering broad market prospects. Dimethyl ether has a high cetane number; after being liquefied, it can be used directly as a vehicle fuel, and its combustion performance is better than that of methanol fuel. Due to its oxygen content, single composition, and short carbon chain, dimethyl ether enables smoke-free and efficient combustion while reducing noise. As a fuel alternative for vehicles and in general use, dimethyl ether possesses comprehensive advantages over natural gas, methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen. Studies show that the cost of mass-producing dimethyl ether is not higher than that of diesel, and its costs and environmental impact are lower than those of alternative fuels such as propane and compressed natural gas. Therefore, dimethyl ether holds extremely promising prospects as a vehicle fuel. Dimethyl ether is easy to compress, with a storage pressure of 1.35 Mpa, which is lower than the 1.92 Mpa of liquefied petroleum gas; therefore, it can replace gas and liquefied petroleum gas as a fuel for household use. Canned liquid dimethyl ether will be the future household cleaning fuel. Dimethyl ether can also be blended into city gas or natural gas in certain proportions for peak-shaving purposes, and it can improve the quality of the gas as well as increase its calorific value. Since most refrigerators use chlorofluorocarbons as propellants, scientific research has shown that these substances damage the ozone layer. Therefore, it is necessary to replace chlorofluorocarbons with propellants that are harmless to the environment, and a suitable material is required as a refrigerant for fluoride-free refrigerators. Since the solvency of dimethyl ether is similar to that of chlorofluorocarbons, it is imperative to replace chlorofluorocarbons with dimethyl ether or other butane mixtures as propellants.

Dimethyl ether holds promise as an emerging alternative energy source, but its application and development have not kept up yet. Theoretically, dimethyl ether has great potential due to its advantages such as cleanliness, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. But where exactly can it be used? The domestic dimethyl ether production being hyped up these days is claimed to be over a thousand tons, but in reality it’s only around a hundred tons. If there truly is a output generated by such production capacity, would there be any applications or market for it? I’m afraid it remains unknown. Dimethyl ether is indeed a good substance, but application areas need to be developed.
