In the granulation process of compound fertilizer production, setting aside operational factors, is there any theory that can be used to determine whether a given formula will allow for granulation? I would appreciate some guidance from an expert.
In the formulation of compound fertilizers, the proportions of the various ingredients can be calculated, but the process of forming pellets is mainly adjusted through experimentation and practical methods. I think that as long as it’s possible to produce them, it’s feasible to granulate them; it’s just that different production processes result in particles with different appearances. There is no specific calculation method for this. The proportions in a formula can be calculated, but as for the balling rate, I haven’t come across any information suggesting that it can be calculated either. There are many factors to consider when forming balls from materials, including the physical and chemical properties of the materials themselves, the reactions that occur between different materials, as well as the temperature and humidity conditions during granulation. One can start by trying out the method mentioned above on a small scale; in actual production, however, it’s necessary to rely on practical experience
Granulability cannot be determined through calculation; it is primarily related to the compatibility of the raw materials, the choice of binders (fillers), and the formulation. Generally, compound fertilizers with low nutrient contents have better granulability, while those with high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus are easier to granulate; formulations with high potassium content are more difficult to granulate. The granulation conditions can be adjusted by modifying the return ratio.
