I’ve found that the posts I make are all pretty similar, in the form of preaching, and it’s difficult to attract others in order to achieve the goal of communication and education. It is recommended that future posts incorporate real-life situations and small events that happen around us, so that people can truly understand the importance of safety. (This is a virtual world, so there’s no need to worry too much.) Let me start by talking about a minor safety incident. In the workshop, to save trouble, people put their safety helmets on directly over their heads without fastening their seat belts. There was an accident once. During the major repair, I was responsible for clearing the trash, and there was so much of it – iron pipes, replaced fire arrestors, bricks, and so on. There are too many of them; if you try to carry them in your pocket and pull them down, it’s just too much – even climbing stairs will be exhausting. I consulted with my supervisor, and it was agreed that the trash can be gathered on the platform on the third floor; it can then be thrown down as long as there is no one below. I’m glad; it saves a lot of effort. At noon, a strong wind blew. The team leader was inspecting below; unfortunately, a steel pipe fell and hit him on the head. Fortunately, he wore a helmet and was not injured. However, he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and his hat was blown away. Case from our factory: On April 2 last year, a worker accidentally fell backward from a platform that was less than 2 meters high. This is especially true for ordinary safety helmets designed to protect against falling objects – it is important to understand their capabilities as well as to know the proper ways to use and maintain them. (1) The tightness of the cushioning pad is adjusted by a strap; at least 32 millimeters of space must be available between the top of the head and the upper interior surface of the helmet to use it. (2) Do not wear the safety helmet tilted back on the head when in use, as this will reduce its protection against impacts. (3) The safety helmet strap must be fastened tightly to prevent a decrease in impact resistance due to looseness. (4) Safety helmets should be inspected regularly; if cracks, dents, fissures, or severe wear are detected, they should be replaced immediately.
In productive labor, accidents caused by unexpected falling objects hitting the human body occur from time to time. The damage caused by falling objects to the human body is primarily due to the impact force of acceleration. Such accidents are characterized by their sudden occurrence, making it difficult to avoid them; they also last for a short time and exert great force, especially with objects falling from above, as the impact occurs in just an instant. Such accidents occur frequently in industries such as construction, mining, metallurgy, quarrying, oil exploration, and tunneling. In the event of a shock accident, the area most likely to be injured is the head. The head is where the body’s nervous system is located, and the thinnest part of its skull is only about 2 mm thick. Once the head is subjected to external force, it can cause serious injuries such as concussions, intracranial hemorrhage, meningeal contusions, and skull fractures, leading to disorders in bodily functions; in mild cases this results in disability, while in severe cases it can be life-threatening. Therefore, the heads of workers in the workplace must be protected, and the essential item for head protection is a safety helmet. How much can the human body withstand in terms of sudden impact forces? According to foreign research, the cervical vertebrae in the human body can break under a force of 4900 N, causing the spinal fluid to leak out and posing a threat to life. The shorter the duration of action, the greater the impact distance, and the heavier the falling object, the greater the impact force. When an impact injury accident occurs, the force of the impact is generally much greater than 4900 N; therefore, workers need to wear safety helmets to prevent potential damage to their bodies caused by falling objects. The protective function of a safety helmet is to reduce the force of impact when workers are struck or compressed by falling objects or hard objects, thereby preventing or minimizing damage to the head. Theoretically, during the impact process – that is, from the moment the falling object comes into contact with the head until it separates from the helmet shell – the various components of the safety helmet (the shell, lining, latches, straps, cushioning materials, etc.) first break down the impact force. Then, through the elastic and plastic deformation of these components as well as controlled damage, most of the impact force is absorbed, ensuring that the force acting on the human head is less than 4900 N, thereby providing protection. This property of safety helmets is known as impact absorption capacity, and it is one of the important indicators for determining whether a safety helmet is qualified.
There are many manufacturers of safety helmet products, they are used in a wide range of applications, come in various types, and have different structures. (1) Classified by the material used for the helmet shell, there are plastic safety helmets, fiberglass safety helmets, rubber safety helmets, bamboo-woven safety helmets, aluminum alloy safety helmets, and paper-gum safety helmets, etc. Safety helmets made from the first four materials are widely used, while those made from the last two are used less frequently. Based on the external shape of the helmet shell, they can be classified into various types such as single crown strap, double crown strap, multiple crown straps, \"V\"-shaped crown strap, \"Rice\"-shaped crown strap, crown strapless, and helmet-style designs. (2) Classified by brim size, there are safety helmets with large brims, medium brims, small brims, and rolled brims, whose brim sizes are 50–70 mm, 30–50 mm, and 0–30 mm respectively. (3) Classified by workplace, there are safety helmets for general operations and those for special operations. General-purpose safety helmets are used in workplaces where there is risk of general impact injuries, such as construction sites ; Safety helmets for special operations are used in work environments that require special protection, such as those with low temperatures, live electrical currents, or sources of fire. Different types of safety helmets have varying technical performance requirements, and the appropriate one should be selected based on actual needs.
Only after the accident did I realize the usefulness of bringing it, but why were they reluctant to bring it? It is appropriate to enforce systems strictly, and that is also the conventional approach. But can we think about this issue from the opposite perspective – how to help employees develop the habit of voluntarily prioritizing safety? There might be a better way to solve it.

Let me tell you about an accident I was involved in: Inside a ductwork structure that was 8 to 9 meters high, two workers were removing scaffolding. On the ground, there was a cleaner who was bending down to clean; he was wearing a safety helmet properly, with the straps fastened as well. At that moment, a pipe that was nearly 1 meter long fell and hit the cleaner on the head. As a result, the hat developed a crack of about 5 centimeters (the hat was of relatively good quality); 6 stitches were needed on the head, and there was a mild concussion. Actually, having someone to supervise or using warning ropes could have prevented this accident; fortunately, the cleaner’s hat was of good quality and worn properly. Otherwise, one’s life will surely not be saved.
