Analysis Report on the Development Situation of China’s Ammonia Synthesis Industry in 2007 Background for the preparation of this report: The **Medium- and Long-Term Energy Conservation Plan** issued by the National Development and Reform Commission has designated ammonia synthesis as a key area and priority project for energy conservation and consumption reduction. In accordance with the planning requirements, over the next 15 years, **on the one hand, efforts will be accelerated to carry out industrial transformations that use clean coal or natural gas as alternatives to petroleum in the production of ammonia, in order to conserve these valuable petroleum resources ; On the other hand, significant efforts will be made to develop and promote energy-saving and consumption-reducing technologies, with the energy consumption per ton in large-scale ammonia synthesis plants to be reduced from the current 1,372 kilograms of standard coal per ton to 1,000 kilograms of standard coal per ton. Therefore, accelerating the energy-saving upgrades of ammonia synthesis plants has become an essential path for many large fertilizer manufacturers to reduce energy consumption and waste. Methods for saving energy and reducing consumption include expanding production scale, selecting purification methods suitable for the raw materials, adopting new processes, and recycling waste heat. We will conduct an in-depth analysis of the above aspects in the first part of the report. The coal gasification processes that are currently highly regarded in China include Texaco (GE), Shell, GSP (Germany), etc.; all of these belong to the large-scale fluidized bed gasification technology and are generally used in synthetic ammonia plants of medium to large scale. In recent years, there has been a surge in China to adopt Shell’s dry powder gasification technology, with some urea manufacturers converting from oil-based to coal-based production being particularly proactive in this regard. When companies introduce advanced technologies, it takes a considerable amount of time to adjust and integrate them. For example, it took nearly a year to adjust Hualu Hengsheng’s new domestic water-coal slurry technology at Lunan Fertilizer Plant, despite having prior experience with it; meanwhile, Shuanghuan Technology’s Shell gasifier took more than half a year to be put into operation after several delays. Numerous issues arose, including problems with the control systems, equipment calibration, and adjustment of technical parameters, and there are still some minor details that need to be resolved. Therefore, enterprises must conduct thorough research and prepare themselves mentally before making investments. When choosing gasification technologies for different regions, they also need to take into account the enterprise’s own technical capabilities as well as the types of coal available locally. In this report, we will analyze gasification technologies from various aspects, with a focus on the differences between Shell’s dry powder gasification technology and China’s domestic multi-nozzle water-coal slurry gasification technology, in order to provide guidance for domestic companies in selecting the appropriate process route for themselves. The main point of the report is that producing fertilizers through coal gasification and synthetic ammonia is another approach in coal chemical industry. We know that the raw materials for ammonia synthesis include roughly the following: coal (different gasification processes: coal water slurry (gas flow bed), pulverized coal (gas flow bed), lump coal (fixed bed, fluidized bed (slightly smaller particle size)) ; Natural gas: steam reforming, partial oxidation, catalytic conversion ; Oil extraction: partial oxidation (currently, many factories have switched to using coal as a raw material, such as Dongni/Zhijiang Fertilizer Factory, etc.) ; Naphtha: catalytic partial oxidation; currently, it is mostly being converted from oil to coal ; Due to domestic constraints on oil and gas resources, producing synthetic ammonia from coal will be the direction for future development, and we expect this proportion to exceed 60%. Since the 1970s, our country has begun to introduce large-scale ammonia synthesis plants. A few years after these plants came online, they underwent numerous modifications to their feedstock pathways as well as energy-saving upgrades, including changes from oil to coal, from coal to oil, from oil to gas, and from anthracite to pulverized coal. Dozens of major renovations were carried out in areas such as the hydrocarbon steam conversion section, the shift reaction section, the decarburization section, and the control systems. Among these upgrades, improvements to the gas generation furnaces, furnace operation monitoring and system optimization, and the desulfurization systems have always been of particular importance. With the continuous rise in energy prices, it has become a trend to carry out second and third rounds of systematic or partial technical upgrades to the production facilities, building on the aforementioned modifications, with the aim of saving energy, increasing output, and altering the raw material supply routes. Downstream of synthetic ammonia, nitrogen fertilizers such as urea are primarily produced. Chart 2 shows the health of the global synthetic ammonia industry; it can be seen from this that global synthetic ammonia production capacity will continue to grow in the coming years, with the capacity utilization rate reaching a low point in 2010 ; Currently, signs of overcapacity in the production of nitrogen fertilizers such as urea are already appearing in China. In 2007, the average international crude oil price could drop to $60 per barrel, which might lead to a decline in urea prices, though the extent of that decline will not be significant ; We believe that in the future, nitrogen fertilizer manufacturers can only achieve growth by reducing costs through technological upgrades or by carrying out industry consolidation. Furthermore, artificially suppressed natural gas prices in the past allowed urea plants that use natural gas as a raw material to enjoy excess profits for a certain period; with the end of these price discounts and the continuous rise in the cost of natural gas for fertilizer production, such plants will face a sharp increase in their raw material costs. The 2007 Report on the Development Trends of China’s Ammonia Production Industry is a key research report produced by the Coal Chemicals Group of this center during the 2006–2007 period. It provides an in-depth analysis of the current status of energy conservation and efficiency improvements in China’s ammonia production enterprises, as well as the technological developments in this field. The report focuses on how major enterprises are utilizing coal gasification technology to upgrade existing ammonia production facilities. Gasification opens up a broad range of downstream product possibilities, including synthetic ammonia, methanol, dimethyl ether, and acetic acid. In Part 3, we will focus on forecasting and analyzing the market development prospects for the synthetic ammonia and urea-based nitrogen fertilizer industries both domestically and internationally in the coming period. The data presented in the report mainly come from the **Statistics Bureau, the China Nitrogen Fertilizer Industry Association, the China Coal Industry Association, and the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. In line with principles of pragmatism and caution, our center has conducted thorough verification of all the data ; During the preparation of this report, we also received support in the form of insights from the China Coal Research Institute as well as experts in the field of synthetic ammonia. We consulted a large number of foreign publications as well; the report features rigorous analysis and clear viewpoints, making it a reliable reference for synthetic ammonia production enterprises, investment institutions, and individuals to accurately understand the development trends of this industry and formulate appropriate strategies for enterprise development and investment. With the elimination of favorable prices for natural gas and its continuous rise, ammonia production plants using natural gas as a raw material are facing increasing pressure due to rising raw material costs.) China’s nitrogen fertilizer industry exhibits a distinct “double 60%” pattern: 60% are large coal-based enterprises, and 60% are small and medium-sized enterprises. In a sense, there is a clear positive correlation between the prices of downstream products derived from synthetic ammonia and coal prices; changes in coal prices will directly affect the fluctuations in the prices of these downstream products. In this section, we will focus on analyzing the future development trends of China’s synthetic ammonia raw material industry as well as the market prospects for its downstream products, in the hope of providing assistance for corporate strategic planning.
