Floating roof tanks are divided into internal floating roofs and external floating roofs. I have only seen internal floating roof tanks before; I haven’t encountered external floating roof tanks. Could everyone please explain what external floating roof tanks look like, as well as their advantages, disadvantages, and uses?
Does no one know? It’s still not used much; nobody has paid much attention to it……
The external floating roof tank is currently the most commonly used structural type among large-scale oil tanks both domestically and internationally, and it is primarily used for storing substances such as crude oil, gasoline, and diesel. Due to the development of large fixed-roof and internal floating-roof technologies in recent years, most gasoline and aviation kerosene storage tanks now use internal floating-roof or dome-shaped tank structures. New externally floating roof oil tanks are almost always used for storing crude oil. The commonly used floating roof structures at present are double-disc and single-disc types. For external floating roof tanks, the upper part is open; no additional roof is required, and the top of the floating roof is in direct contact with the atmosphere. From the perspective of tank structural design, what sets external floating roof tanks apart from other types of tanks is the way in which instability of the tank walls under wind loads is addressed. To increase the stiffness of the pipe wall, in addition to installing edge angle steel at the upper edge of the wall panel, an anti-wind ring is also installed about 1 meter below the lower edge of the wall panel. The wind-resistant ring is a composite cross-sectional structure assembled from steel plates and shaped steel, and its shape can be circular or polygonal. For large oil tanks, one or several additional reinforcing rings must be installed on the tank wall beneath the wind-resistant ring, to prevent the wall below that ring from becoming unstable.
