Ten biogas power plants have been built in our country to generate electricity. By the end of 2007, 10 such plants had been completed and put into operation, supplying clean energy to society on a continuous basis. To develop and utilize biomass energy, Longji Power Company introduced world-leading bioelectric power generation technology from Denmark in 2004. Over the past two years, bioelectric power plants that utilize advanced technology provided by Longji Power Company and are funded and constructed by Guoneng Bioelectric Power Company have emerged from scratch, growing at an impressive pace. Since the construction and operation of China’s first biogas power plant, the Shandong Shanxian Biogas Power Plant, in December 2006, additional biogas power plants have been built and put into operation, including those in Gaotang and Kenli in Shandong Province, Weixian and Cheng’an in Hebei Province, Sheyang in Jiangsu Province, Wangkui in Heilongjiang Province, Liaoyuan in Jilin Province, as well as those in Junxian and Luyi in Henan Province. By the end of 2007, over a period of one year, they had jointly built 10 biogas power plants. Biomass power generation is favored by countries around the world for its zero carbon dioxide emissions. The biogas power generation industry is developing rapidly and healthily in our country, opening up a new path for energy conservation and emission reduction. Taking the Shanxian Biogas Power Plant as an example, it has an installed capacity of 25,000 kilowatts, consumes nearly 200,000 tons of straw per year, generates 160 million kWh of electricity annually, and can create an industrial output value of over 100 million yuan. By the end of 2007, this power plant had generated over 200 million kWh of electricity. Compared to coal-fired power plants of the same scale, it can save over 90,000 tons of standard coal per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 tons. The 10 biogas power plants that are currently in operation together have an annual installed capacity of 250,000 kilowatts. If they operate properly, they can generate over 1.6 billion kWh of \"green electricity\" per year, saving more than 900,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million tons. Biogas generation can also increase farmers’ incomes. After the Shanxian Biogas Power Plant came online, it created more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. Farmers in the surrounding areas sell straw to power plants, earning an additional income of around 50 million yuan per year; they also receive about 8,000 tons of plant ash for use as fertilizer in their fields. As an energy source for farmers’ daily use, the efficiency of burning straw is only about 15%, whereas biomass direct-fired power generation boilers can raise the thermal efficiency to over 90%. Using the large amounts of waste straw in rural areas to generate electricity turns waste into a resource, thereby saving resources and protecting the environment.
